What holds up

A 2023 mouse study found that, in mice whose gut microbiota had been depleted and whose endometriosis-like lesions were experimentally induced, fecal material from mice with endometriosis restored lesion growth, whereas fecal material from mice without endometriosis did not. This supports a possible role for gut microbes in lesion progression in that animal model. Human and animal research also reports microbiome differences associated with endometriosis.

What does not

The post turns preliminary animal-model findings into the broad claim that the gut is driving endometriosis. The cited type of experiment did not show that transferring bacteria alone gave otherwise healthy mice endometriosis; researchers first created endometriosis-like lesions in the recipient mice. Evidence in people has not established a causal gut-microbiome signature or shown that changing gut bacteria treats endometriosis. The stated 75% lesion-size reduction was not confirmed in the identified study.

Why it matters

Leaving out that these were experimentally induced mouse lesions, not human endometriosis, materially changes the audience's likely belief from 'a possible mechanism under study' to 'a demonstrated main cause and treatment target.'

Why Clear says this

The claim has a real scientific basis in controlled mouse experiments, so it is not directly contradicted. But the central framing overstates what those experiments mean for people. A 2025 systematic scoping review found marked heterogeneity across human microbiome studies, no sound evidence for a specific gut-dysbiosis profile in women with endometriosis, and substantial confounding from factors such as diet, medications, and menstrual-cycle timing. Major health authorities continue to describe the causes of endometriosis as unknown.
